OUR HISTORY

At an Alumni Reception at DePaul University, the four Founding Artists discovered their shared passion for environmental sustainability in the arts. They grappled with the dichotomy between schools that place emphasis on an active fine arts program versus those who hold an active sense of environmental awareness. The sentiment of wanting to provide a safe space for young artists to develop as practitioners of both theatre and the world grew until Growth, itself, was born.

When a young Vietnamese girl plants beans in a vacant lot to connect with the memory of her father, the diverse group of locals who take notice find a connection of their own in a spirited effort to re-imagine their run-down neighborhood. The first year in the life of a community garden unfolds in this "spoken musical," adapted from the award-winning children's novel of the same name, as the voices of characters from far-flung backgrounds converge in a rhythmic hymn to community.

The Story of Opal is about a little girl who lived at the turn of the 20th century in a lumber camp in Oregon. She was a prodigy who kept a diary that showed a surprising and charming way in which she looked at the world. She was a lonely child and had only the Bible and an almanac to read at home. The forest was her cathedral, and she went there every day to talk to the trees. This play is an adaptation of Opal’s diary, where we meet her animal and plant friends, but also some special grown-ups, such as “The Man Who Wears Gray Neckties and Is Kind to Mice”.
